The importance of cycling facilities and security in the UK. Beicio Cymru Wales & Volair Huyton BMX Pump Track & Velodrome.

Across the UK, investment in cycling infrastructure continues to demonstrate how sport can transform communities, strengthen local identity and create safer, more active places to live. The 400m Olympic-standard velodrome and BMX track facility at the Volair Knowsley Leisure and Culture Park, highlight what is possible when structured programmes, accessible venues and community ambitions align.

Purpose-built cycling facilities are far more than sporting venues. They’re hubs of opportunity. Both velodromes and BMX tracks provide controlled, inclusive environments where riders of all ages and abilities can train, compete and build cycling confidence. For young people, access to a structured cycling pathway offers a positive outlet for energy, a framework that influences goal-setting and a strong sense of belonging. For adults, these spaces promote physical wellbeing, social connection and the rediscovery of a sport.

Organisations driving BMX and track cycling initiatives are not simply nurturing elite athletes, they’re in fact playing a pivotal role in building grassroots ecosystems. Beicio Cymru is a prime example of how cycling coaching, club networks, cycling events and development pathways “contribute to inspiring, connecting and improving the well-being of all individuals and communities across our nation”. This approach strengthens local cycling communities, encourages volunteering and supports community engagement through ensuring entry points remain open and affordable.

Increased participation contributes to improved public health outcomes, reduced pressure on healthcare systems and stronger local economies. Cycling events help to attract visitors and support surrounding businesses. When cycling is visible and accessible to a community, it can shift the local culture, helping to normalise sustainable travel and inspire wider participation.

Cycle security plays a critical role in protecting both infrastructure and community confidence. High-quality bicycles and specialist equipment represent significant investment for individuals, clubs and facilities. Without robust security measures, the risk of theft or vandalism negatively affects the rate of cycling participation and growth within communities.

Cycling security infrastructure represents essential community investment that underpins confidence in active travel. The British Transport Police (BTP) recently confirmed a policy that enforces theft prevention and contributes to the growth of cycling in the UK. Under the policy, BTP now commits to investigating stolen bicycles when viable evidence such as CCTV or witness accounts exist. This reaffirms the expectation that thefts will be taken seriously and offenders will now be thoroughly pursued.

This shift matters because cycle theft is an issue that is only increasing. In England and Wales alone, approximately 65,000 bicycles were reported stolen between April 2023 and March 2024. Studies show that 66% of bike theft victims cycle less as a result, while 25% stop altogether. In London, estimates suggest that up to 40,000 bikes are stolen annually, with only a fraction of those bikes successfully recovered. These figures support why secure cycling security is crucial.

Thriving cycling hubs depend on reliability, secure hubs reinforce trust. Riders are more likely to invest in equipment, travel to venues and commit long-term to the sport when they feel confident their assets are protected.

For facilities, cycle security assists with safeguarding of public funding, promoting sponsorship investment opportunities and offers support to sites with their day-to-day maintenance operations.

Great job done from ordering, advice, delivery and construction. Two man crew worked solidly from 7 am to 1pm, refused all offers of coffee and got the bike shelter built despite high winds and rain. Also dismantled our old bike rack.

Very quick delivery from order, the cycle repair stands were well packed and protected and secured to the pallet for transport. Peter and Joanne were excellent to deal with and hopefully will be dealing with them again to purchase more units.
