Why Healthcare Bike Storage Is Different

Healthcare sites must accommodate diverse users while meeting strict compliance standards:

Compliance complexity involves BREEAM, Active Travel England, and NHS-specific standards

24/7 operations require secure access for night shift staff

Mixed user groups need different security levels for staff, patients, and visitors

Accessibility requirements include ground‑level parking for elderly patients and wheelchair users

E‑bike fire safety is critical with growing staff adoption of electric bikes

Waste management integration often requires combined bin+bike stores

OUR STANDOUT HEALTHCARE CASE STUDIES

Liverpool University Hospital

This Bespoke Merton Mesh Bike Shelter transformed the previously empty space into something that is immensely beneficial to the NHS staff and students of Liverpool University Hospital, Aintree. We have helped expand the use of space for cyclists by supplying SECURE cycle storage while adding to the aesthetic of the environment and helping promote a healthier form of transport.

Kettering General Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

We were delighted to support Kettering General Hospital NHS Foundation Trust with the supply and installation of a 12-space Greasby Cycle Shelter, delivering a secure cycling facility for staff. Internally, the shelter is equipped with Semi-Vertical Cycle Racks, an efficient solution that maximises bike capacity. This configuration allows 12 bicycles to be stored comfortably while maintaining safe spacing and ease of use.

Royal Victoria Hospital

Our team installed a secure Mesh Bike Shelter with Timber Clad pressure treated slats, with a Galvanised steel frame and mesh sliding gates. Combination locks on all sliding gates, enforcing security when storing bikes from multiple access points. It was essential that we constructed this shelter to house a variety of bikes, as a prescription to aid health issues and promote healthier well-being. Sheffield stands were positioned to suit Tricycles, Bikes and Recumbent Bikes.

Liverpool University Hospital Windsor House

We delivered a series of high-quality cycle storage solutions designed to promote sustainable travel and provide secure facilities for staff and visitors. As part of the project, our team designed and installed a Mesh-Clad Cycle Store fitted with Semi-Vertical Cycle Racks, each offering three locking points to maximise security. Within the allocated footprint, we successfully accommodated 22 secure cycle parking spaces, ensuring efficient use of the available area without compromising accessibility..

Healthcare & NHS Bike Storage Solutions

Healthcare facilities face unique challenges for bike storage. Hospitals operate 24/7 with mixed user groups, staff working shifts, patients attending appointments, visitors supporting loved ones each with different needs. NHS sustainability targets now require secure, accessible cycle parking as part of staff wellness and carbon reduction strategies.

We specialise in healthcare bike storage solutions that meet BREEAM standards, Active Travel England guidance, and NHS-specific requirements.

Healthcare Bike Storage FAQ

What are BREEAM requirements for hospital bike storage?

BREEAM healthcare requirements specify 1 space per 10 staff, or 1 space per 2 consulting rooms/10 beds, with a minimum of 4 spaces [Link: BREEAM Tra 03 Technical Manual]. Storage must be covered, securely fixed, well-lit, and within 100m of building entrances [Link: BREEAM Knowledge Base].

Do NHS hospitals need special e‑bike charging solutions?

Yes. NHS fire safety regulations require dedicated fire‑safe charging for lithium batteries. Our healthcare‑specific charging lockers include automatic shut‑off and certified fire‑retardant construction.

Can bike storage be combined with waste management?

Yes. Combined bin+bike stores are ideal for healthcare sites needing both waste management and cycling infrastructure. They save space and often simplify planning approval.

What accessibility standards apply to healthcare bike storage?

LTN 1/20 requires provision for non‑standard cycles [Link: UK Government LTN 1/20]. Healthcare facilities should provide ground‑level, no‑lift parking for elderly patients and wheelchair users, with wheelchair‑accessible routes.

How do you handle 24/7 hospital access requirements?

Keypad‑access lockers allow 24/7 staff entry without key management. For public areas, well‑lit, CCTV‑covered shelters maintain security around the clock.

Great job done from ordering, advice, delivery and construction. Two man crew worked solidly from 7 am to 1pm, refused all offers of coffee and got the bike shelter built despite high winds and rain. Also dismantled our old bike rack.

Excellent company to deal with, all queries and questions answered promptly. Very happy with the service. Very quick delivery from order, the cycle repair stands were well packed and protected and secured to the pallet for transport. Peter and Joanne were excellent to deal with and hopefully will be dealing with them again to purchase more units.
