Cycle Storage Solutions For Workplaces & The Commercial Sector

Why Workplace Bike Storage Is Important

More employees than ever are choosing to cycle to work. The commute is changing. Rising fuel costs, improved cycling infrastructure and a greater focus on health and sustainability have all contributed to a steady increase in cycling rates across UK towns and cities. For employers, providing secure, well-designed cycle storage is no longer a nice to have, it is becoming a requirement.

Workplace cycle storage supports a range of business priorities: ESG targets, employee wellbeing, recruitment and retention, and compliance with planning and building regulations. Whether you are fitting out a new office, developing a commercial site, or retrofitting an existing building, the right storage solution makes a measurable difference.

At Secure Cycle Store we design, supply and install commercial bike parking for workplaces of all sizes, from a single shelter to multi-hundred bike systems for national headquarters. We handle the compliance, the specification and the installation so you can focus on making your workplace fit for the future.

OUR STANDOUT EDUCATION CASE STUDIES

Department Of Social Care Westminster London, UK

We designed a layout that maximised the available footprint whilst significantly improving user experience. The first step was to remove the existing Non-Gas Assisted Two-Tier Cycle Racks. We then installed a premium 2ParkUp Gas-Assisted Two-tier system. The gas-assisted upper tier dramatically improves usability, making lifting and lowering bicycles far easier and encouraging full use of the available vertical space. Standard lower racks were used for quick and convenient parking. We also installed Sheffield Toast Racks offering accessible parking for a wide range of cyclists without compromising capacity.

The Garret Hotel Hotel and Restaurant, Scotland

We were appointed to supply and install an 8 space Trinity Timber Cycle Shelter, purpose-built to suit the setting and operational needs of the hotel. Measuring 3100mm wide by 2100mm deep and 2100mm high, the structure was designed to offer a compact yet highly effective storage solution, ideal for accommodating visiting cyclists in a convenient and secure manner. Internally, the shelter is fitted with 4 Sheffield Cycle Stands, providing secure and organised parking for up to 8 bicycles. The layout was carefully planned to maximise the available space while allowing for easy access and manoeuvrability, ensuring a user-friendly experience for cyclists of all types.

Violet Way, St.Helens

Working with our client on a new Fire Station development on Violet Way, St. Helens. We were asked to supply and install secure cycle storage as per architectural specifications. Our 10-space Trinity Timber Clad Cycle Shelter was the chosen product. Galvanised and powder coated frame finish with PAR-treated hit and miss timber cladding, with integrated cycle hoops as part of the shelter, securing the bikes. The final finish had achieved all expectations.

St Johns Wood Sports Venue

As part of the project, our team designed and installed 3 Trinity Timber Two Tier Bike Shelters (all finished with bespoke open frames). All shelters were fitted with 2ParkUp Two-Tier Bike Rack with Gas Assist, all offering 3 points of locking to maximise security. Within the allocated project footprint, we successfully accommodated 90 secure cycle parking spaces, ensuring efficient use of the available area without compromising accessibility.

E-Bike Solutions, Charging and Storage for the Electric Commute

E-Bike Solutions, Charging and Storage for the Electric Commute

E-bike adoption in the UK has grown rapidly, and workplaces are feeling the demand. Employees arriving on e-bikes need somewhere to store and charge batteries safely. This is a fast-growing requirement that many commercial buildings are not yet equipped to handle.

Our E-Bike Solutions range covers both secure storage and charging infrastructure. Options include:

E-bike lockers with integrated charging points per bay

Charging shelters for outdoor parking areas

Battery charging cabinets for separate, fire-safe charging

Upgraded two-tier racks with gas assist struts rated for 25kg e-bikes

Fire safety for e-bike battery charging is an increasingly important consideration. We supply and advise on compliant storage and charging setups that separate batteries from escape routes and follow emerging best practice guidance. This is based on our experience advising commercial clients on fire risk assessments for e-bike parking setups since 2024.

Regulatory Requirements: What Employers Need to Know

The regulatory landscape for workplace cycle storage is structured around three key frameworks: BREEAM, local planning policy and national design standards.

BREEAM Tra 03 and Tra 04

BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) is the leading sustainability assessment for UK buildings. The Transport category requires developers to provide cycle storage that meets specific minimums. For a typical office, BREEAM Tra 03 requires at least one secure cycle space per 10 staff BREEAM Tra 03 Technical Manual. Tra 04 awards additional credits for end of trip facilities including showers, lockers and drying space.

These credits matter because they contribute directly to the building’s overall BREEAM rating. A rating of Excellent or Outstanding can significantly increase property value and tenant appeal. For developers and property managers, compliance is non-negotiable if certification is a project goal.

Local Planning Policy

Most local authorities now include cycle parking standards in their local plans. Requirements vary by council but typically align with or exceed the minimums in the London Plan or national guidance. For example, commercial developments in Greater London must provide one cycle space per 20 sqm of office floor area in high-density zones London Plan Policy T5. This standard has been widely adopted as a benchmark by councils outside London too.

LTN 1/20 and Inclusive Design

The UK Government’s Local Transport Note 1/20 sets out the design standard for cycle infrastructure, including parking. It requires that at least 5 percent of cycle parking spaces accommodate non-standard cycles, including cargo bikes, adapted cycles and tricycles UK Government LTN 1/20. It also specifies minimum access widths, aisle spacing and lighting requirements to make cycle storage genuinely usable.

We design every workplace installation to meet these standards as a baseline, and exceed them where project requirements demand it.

End-of-Trip Facilities: Completing the Cycle Commute

Bike storage is one part of a successful workplace cycling offer. End of trip facilities (EOTF) make the commute practical. Employees who can shower, change and store their workwear are far more likely to cycle regularly.

Our End-of-Trip Facilities range includes:

Personal lockers for clothing and equipment

Bench seating for changing rooms

Public bike repair stands for on-site maintenance

We supply and install EOTF as standalone projects or integrated with a wider cycle storage scheme. We can also advise on how these facilities contribute to BREEAM Tra 04 credits and Cycling UK’s Cycle Friendly Employer accreditation. The Cycle Friendly Employer (CFE) scheme assesses workplaces across four levels: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Secure cycle parking is a core requirement at every level Cycling UK Cycle Friendly Employer. By providing compliant storage and appropriate EOTF, employers position themselves to achieve and maintain accreditation.

Workplace Bike Storage Solutions

Product Range: Matching Storage to Your Workplace

Every workplace is different. A serviced office in a city centre needs a different solution to a distribution centre on a business park. We carry a broad product range to match each setting.

Bike Shelters for Outdoor Workplace Parking

For workplaces with external space, the Bike Shelters range offers weather-protected, secure parking for any number of bikes. Options include freestanding shelters, lean-to designs and fully enclosed compounds with lockable gates. Materials range from galvanised steel to bespoke mesh panels matching building aesthetics.

Typical applications: Business parks, corporate campuses, warehouse and logistics sites.

Two-Tier Racks for High-Density Indoor Storage

When floor space is constrained and bike demand is high, Two-Tier Bike Racks are the most efficient solution. Our gas assist two-tier rack uses a gas strut to support the upper bike at up to 25kg, making loading easier for heavier e-bikes. Each bike takes approximately 375mm of linear floor width (Secure Cycle Store product specification), compared to over one metre for Sheffield stands. We have installed over 200 semi-vertical and two-tier racks in a single office basement, as seen at HUB Victoria in central London Case Study: HUB Victoria.

Typical applications: Office basements, multi-storey car parks, indoor parking rooms.

Bike Lockers for Premium Security

Where security is a top concern, Bike Lockers provide individual enclosed storage for each bicycle. Lockers protect against weather, theft and vandalism, and are popular at sites where employees leave high-value bikes or where the parking is in a publicly accessible area.

Typical applications: City centre offices, client-facing buildings, mixed-use developments.

Bike Racks for Flexible Floor Plans

Single-tier Bike Racks including Sheffield stands, wave racks and semi-vertical stands suit lower-density parking and areas with no height constraints. Semi-vertical racks offer a compromise: space efficient while keeping both wheels on the ground for easy loading.

Typical applications: Smaller offices, break rooms, temporary parking expansions.

Our Process: From Consultation to Installation

Every workplace storage project follows a structured process, designed to minimise disruption and deliver the right result first time.

Step 1: Consultation — We discuss your bike parking targets and review any compliance requirements (BREEAM, planning conditions, local standards).

Step 2: Design and specification — We produce a scaled layout showing rack positions, access routes and clearances. We confirm product choices, finishes, capacity and budget. Design service is included for projects over a minimum value.

Step 3: Supply — Products are manufactured or sourced to specification. Lead times vary by product: shelters and two-tier racks typically 2-4 weeks, lockers and EOTF items 1-3 weeks (Secure Cycle Store typical lead times, 2026).

Step 4: Installation — Our installation team handles all on-site work: fixing, assembly, signage and handover. We work around your operating hours. Most installations are completed in one to five days depending on scale. All installations carry a workmanship warranty.

Step 5: Handover and support — We provide maintenance guidance and remain on hand for any follow-up requirements. Post-installation support is included for the duration of the warranty period.

How to Plan Your Workplace Bike Storage

Choosing the right solution depends on a few practical questions:

How many employees need parking? Multiply your current cycling uptake by projected growth. A 10-15 percent cycling rate is a realistic target for most UK workplaces with good facilities.

Indoor or outdoor? Indoor storage offers better security and weather protection. Outdoor shelters are cheaper to install but need to be sited close to entrances for active travel compliance.

Do you need to meet a specific BREEAM credit? If yes, confirm the required provision ratio (usually 1 space per 10 staff for Tra 03) and whether EOTF credits are targeted.

Will you need e-bike charging? If more than 10 percent of your team cycle or are considering an e-bike, plan for charging infrastructure now. Retrofitting is more expensive.

What is the budget and timeline? We can advise on cost ranges per space for each product type during consultation.

Great job done from ordering, advice, delivery and construction. Two man crew worked solidly from 7 am to 1pm, refused all offers of coffee and got the bike shelter built despite high winds and rain. Also dismantled our old bike rack.

Excellent company to deal with, all queries and questions answered promptly. Very happy with the service. Very quick delivery from order, the cycle repair stands were well packed and protected and secured to the pallet for transport. Peter and Joanne were excellent to deal with and hopefully will be dealing with them again to purchase more units.
